A friendly smile is what I miss most!
As things are beginning to loosen here in southwestern PA & across the U.S., I am anticipating what it will be like once I get used to the idea of having to wear a protective face covering everywhere I go. I don’t mind it too much but I do miss being able to gesture a friendly smile along the way.
From my perspective the absence of something as simple as a smile inhibits the opportunity for a comment or conversation, a compliment, sharing, emotion & connection. A feeling of indifference exists; let’s keep our heads down, our physical bodies out of the way, don’t make eye contact, accomplish the task(s) at hand & only interact with other humans when absolutely necessary. It's a natural level of anxiety that seems to come with the unnatural act of social distancing.
I am not sure that I will ever get used to this as a way of day to day living, but I know that it is necessary at least for now. It’s change & eventually as I come to terms, I am hopeful that I can be less anxious & more relaxed, interact safely, smile with my eyes & embrace this time in my life as an opportunity to appreciate the simple things I love.
I will look forward to the time when we can get back to exchanging a friendly smile but until then, my eyes will do the smiling. I hope yours will be smiling too!
