As far back as I can remember I have always loved to dance. When I was very young there were ballet lessons, however short-lived. A relative opened a dance studio and recruited every small child in the family for lessons. This was most likely the only reason I was allowed to be enrolled. I loved taking dance lessons, but the dance studio closed not soon after it began.

Later on in the neighborhood I had a girlfriend who lived in a house with a front patio and sliding glass doors. We would set up her record player on the patio and dance to our hearts content, teaching and critiquing each other using the large glass doors to see ourselves in action. Good times!

When Nancy Sinatra’s Hit, These Boots Are Made For Walkin', was released in the late 60's I was captivated by her persona, dancing the go-go, and those boots! I really wanted a pair of those boots! I got a pair for Christmas one year soon after and even they were white (not black) I didn’t care. I had my very own go-go boots and there was no stopping me!

I would strut my chubby self up the street to my girlfriends house in my red stirrup stretch pants and my white go-go boots to dance. I didn’t care who saw me. Hell, I wanted everyone to see me. Those days in my very active imagination I was a rock star when I wore those boots. I was too young and unaware to know or care what anyone else thought as long as they weren’t being outright mean or nasty. But, as we all know that changes soon enough in more ways than one.

As we make our way through life, we will feel eyes on us often. Sometimes in a good way, with compliments, encouragement, kindness and love. At other times with judgement, criticism, expectations and disappointment. Often times we are our own worst enemy, expecting that we should be able to rise above all that is in our lives and nurture everyone else around us to do the same. We think everyone is looking at us, judging. In reality they are not, but we are judging and criticizing ourselves.

I raise my hand - Yep, that’s me!

How I got here I’m not exactly sure except to say that it is most likely due to fundamental feelings and incremental responses to relationships and experiences thus far in my life.

Everything meshes together; you become what you are and it is what is.

Even if just for a few minutes it feels good to let go, be carefree, joyous and grateful of a life being lived, your life - every ever bit of it!

So, let's kick up our heels, take a chance - and dance like no one is watching!

Suzanne

Wow, your writing brings back great memories of our childhood. Such simpler times, that's for sure. I remember playing records and dancing with you. too. We were pretty good...hah! Had a good chuckle about "These Boots Are Made For Walkin" and your white go-go boots.....remember them vividly!!

Love you and miss those days!!

Hi Nina! I almost included a mention of our dance parties in your living room as part of my story. It certainly came to mind as one of my fondest childhood memories as I was writing this blog post. Thanks so much for taking time to read it! I’m so glad it made you smile. Love you back! Always, Suzanne
